Peoples Tires
& Service – Buchmann Tire & Retreading,
Inc.
Millard Buchmann, the founder of Peoples Tires & Service, opened the
business March 8, 1954 in
Cullman, Alabama. The company offered custom retreading for passenger tires as well as large truck
tires, new tires for passenger cars, trucks, and farm tractors, and
service items such as wheel balancing, wheel alignment, brake, front-end
repair, and road service. The company enjoyed reasonable success with an
annual sales volume of $600,000, the year of 1969.
The retail trade name was changed to Big B Tires in 1963, and later named
Big 10 Tires in 1970 when the first branch store in
Decatur, Alabama was opened. The supply
company continued to be known as Buchmann Tire & Retreading,
Inc., furnishing their products to the retail Big 10 Tire Stores. That same year, the truck and farm tire sales and service were phased out, and
total efforts were concentrated on expanding with additional tire stores,
handling passenger tires and small truck tires.
The retail store’s name was changed to Peoples Tires & Service
in 1986 after the owners of the Pensacola, Florida Big 10 Tire group sold their
stores and the Big 10 Tire trademark they had registered in
Alabama.
